The Middle Ages: 1066-1485
Norman Conquest, 1066
William the Conquerer and his Norman army defeated the English king, Har archaic, at the Battle of battle of Hastings in 1066.
William installed himself as king of England.
The feudal system of landownership that William created do a kind structure in which every individual had a place in a class system.
The Normans never withdrew from England.
William the Conquerer and the Norman Influence
He was the illegitimate son of the previous duke of Normandy.
William claimed that the old king promised the throne to him.
He considered the throne to be truly his.
He wanted to rule the Anglo-Saxons, not eliminate them.
The Normans brought administrative ability, an emphasis on law and order, and cultural unity.

William and his successors remained dukes of Normandy and kings of England.

Once knighted, the youth became a man with the title Sir and the enough rights of the warrior caste.
Women in Medieval Society: No Voice, No Choice
Women had no political rights in a system that was primarily military.
A woman was always subservient to a man.
Her husbands or fathers social standing determined the degree of respect she commanded.
